Thailand needs to bolster ties with key members of the Organisation of the Islamic Conference (OIC), including Malaysia, Turkey and Saudi Arabia, to keep it from intervening in the southern insurgency, army chief Sonthi Boonyaratkalin said yesterday. Gen Sonthi said Bangkok has to promote better understanding with the three countries and especially clear the air with Saudi Arabia, whose relations with Thailand turned sour following the royal gems theft case in 1989 and the murders of four Saudi diplomats the same year.
